Abstract

This Symposium will explore how digital media and new technologies have affected the ways through which musicians, producers and researchers experiment and engage with "traditional" musical forms, in Colombia and in other parts of the world. The participants are invited to share their research results and methodological experimentations in the field of applied ethnomusicology, music pedagogy, performance, digital audio production or digital humanities about the study of the impact of digital technologies about current musical practices. This Symposium will also include the presence of several local musicians and producers who will conduct workshops on "traditional" Colombian music and music from other countries of the global South.

Proposals to participate as a speaker should address a research related, but not limited, to the following topics:

  • New Methodologies in Music Research

Presentations

The program will have a maximum of 15 oral presentations (20 min plus 10mn discussion) about ongoing or recently completed research. These presentations will be grouped into several thematic panels, which may include practical workshops and plenary discussions. The language of the Symposium is mainly Spanish, but presentations in English will also be accepted. A small number of special papers may be included. These include an inaugural lecture by Pr. Samuel Araújo, director of the Laboratorio de Ethomusicologia of the Universidade Federal de Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), on the subject of Applied Ethnomusicology and its achievements in Brazil since the last twenty years.

Registration costs

The total cost of the event (which includes coffee and two lunches) will be $30,000 Colombian pesos (around $ 9US) per non-Uniandes’ student and $100,000 Colombian pesos (around $ 30US) per professional.

Submission guidelines

Those interested in presenting a conference paper, a workshop or a panel/roundtable should send a proposal by email to Ons Barnat (od.barnat@uniandes.edu.co),

no later than August 15th, 2019.

This submission should include the name, institutional affiliation, professional role current and a summary of 250 words about your research, background and professional experience (justification of the reasons why you want to participate at the Symposium). Those who wish to make a presentation/workshop/panel should also include a title and a summary of 200 words. Expressions of interest should be sent as a single document containing all the relevant material, in Word or PDF format. The chosen applicants will be notified no later than August 20th and will be invited to register and pay the costs of the Symposium. The organizers will send information about accommodation to successful applicants. Participants will be responsible for the organization of their accommodation.
