Japanese architecture, city and landscape - Japarchi
Japarchi, séminaire sur la spatialité japonaise

2020-2021

Abstract

Presentation
The thematic scientific network Japarchi seeks to define a series of fundamental ideas and devices of the spatial culture of Japan; this work was presented in the publication The Vocabulary of Japanese Spatiality, CNRS Editions in 2014. It currently continues with the online publication of new captions on the Japarchi Internet site.
Since September 2018, an annual Japarchi seminar is part of the on-going process regarding this “open encyclopaedia” with contributions based on a Japanese term or expression. These lexical inputs concern material facilities or arrangements built or deployed in the territory; notions or concepts linked to architecture, urban planning or landscape, the various players who operate in or with space.
Each input offers a description, a historical perspective, an analysis of current functions and interpretation, alongside any other essential characteristics. After a phase of editing and scientific proofreading, the contribution is uploaded onto the Japarchi Internet site.
We encourage researchers, PhD students and potentially Masters’ students to present their research at these sessions. Rather than a completed work, we expect on-going reflection on the words, their significance, their use and the context in which they are used. The following disciplinary fields are called upon with reference to the subject of space and spatial qualities in Japan: architecture, landscape, geography, anthropology of space, sociology, urban planning, urban studies, art and art history.
For 2020-21 we are organizing seminars on the following topics:
- Notion of informal in relation to space and uses.
- Landscape, words and uses in professional discourses, law, in history and currentl
- Japanese gardens achieved in France; the culture of Japanese garden and its relation to landscape gardening or landscape architecture and with other arts.
- Japanese gardens achieved in France; the culture of Japanese garden and its relation to landscape gardening or landscape architecture and with other arts.
- Architectural, urban and landscape heritage currently in the Japanese cities ; about texts, to reality, practices and values.
Miscellaneous: this topic is reserved for scholars who would like to present their on-going work about a word or concept or technical term. Artistic works or films are also possible.
