Résumé

The colloquium is dedicated to the problems of the material record generated by the State during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. It is a period of transition to the Modern State and it is a moment of intensification of the material manifestations of a state nature. The colloquium is organised in three sessions: the first session will deal with the material exhibition of royal power. The second session focuses on the territorialisation of the State. The third one is centered on the autonomous development of the State beyond the monarchy.

Presentation

At the present time, nation-states are in question. Therefore, it is important to attend to its origins in the late Middle Ages, the moment in which the formation of many of the existing ones begins. In this sense, our Research Group studies the transformations of state structures in the late Middle Ages in the Crown of Aragon. In various conferences and publications we have analysed the importance of the social and ideological agents that build the State, legitimacy and conflict in state taxation, the development of diplomacy, the formation of a culture of accounting in administration and communication politics from the lower social strata towards the monarchy. In this context, the colloquium is dedicated to the material registration of the State, to the way in which the State developed its symbolic power and its legitimate domination through the exhibition of specific artifacts. That includes everything from palaces to tiles, from crowns and pantheons to castles, papers and coins, from art objects to weapons. At the same time, it is important to highlight the depersonalisation of the State and the emergence of state institutions that do not derive or are directly related to the kings, and also have their own material record.

Given the current circumstances, the colloquium is virtual, through a combination of recordings and live interventions via videoconference.
