Abstract
For a 3-year research project on anti-semitic hate speech and hate images on the internet, research assistants are wanted. A qualitative linguistic content analysis of social media comments and analysis of image material and text-image relationships related to antisemitic content is planned. In addition, quantitative linguistic methods will also be applied to the social media corpus. For the country teams we are seeking two doctoral students for the English language area, two for the French language area and one for the German language area.

Founded in 1982, the Center for Research on Antisemitism (Zentrum für Antisemitismusforschung, ZfA) at TU Berlin is one of the most important institutions of its kind in the world. The focus of its work is fundamental interdisciplinary research on antisemitism in its manifold causes, manifestations and effects in the past and present, however this has always been expanded to include related topics. The available positions relate to the project "Identifying the Real Dimension of Antisemitism 2.0 in Europe" which will begin in 2020 at the ZfA, analysing patterns of antisemitic language use and images on the internet. For this purpose, three country teams are to be formed: for Germany, Great Britain and France.
Working field
In a three-year pilot project, an international team of researchers will investigate antisemitic language and image use on news websites and social media platforms of the political mainstream in three European countries (Germany, Great Britain, France). A qualitative linguistic content analysis of social media comments and analysis of image material and text-image relationships related to antisemitic content is planned. In addition, quantitative linguistic methods will also be applied to the social media corpus. For the country teams we are seeking two doctoral students for the English language area, two for the French language area and one for the German language area.
Requirements
We are looking for candidates who have successfully completed an academic degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in the subjects of linguistics, applied linguistics, semiotics and/or discourse analysis, social sciences and historical studies
Knowledge or preliminary work in at least one of the following areas is a prerequisite:
- Pragmalinguistics
- Corpus linguistics
- Image analysis, semiotics, multimodal communicationo Discourse Analysis (CDA)
- Media and/or communication studieso Digital Humanitieso Argumentation theory
- Knowledge of past and present manifestations of antisemitism is desirable.
- Experience in using the MAXQDA software is an advantage.
In addition to exceptional technical expertise, excellent communication and team skills are required.
Language skills
- The two doctoral students for the English language area must have excellent spoken and written English language skills.
- The two doctoral students for the French language area must have excellent French language skills as well as excellent spoken and written English skills.
- The doctoral student for the German language area must have excellent German language skills and excellent spoken and written English skills.

The position are open under the condition of third party funding.
