Résumé

For a 3-year research project on anti-semitic hate speech and hate images on the internet, research assistants are wanted. A qual­it­at­ive lin­guistic con­tent ana­lysis of social media com­ments and analysis of image mater­ial and text-image rela­tion­ships related to anti­semitic con­tent is planned. In addi­tion, quant­it­at­ive lin­guistic meth­ods will also be applied to the social media cor­pus. For the coun­try teams we are seek­ing two doc­toral stu­dents for the Eng­lish lan­guage area, two for the French lan­guage area and one for the Ger­man lan­guage area.

Foun­ded in 1982, the Cen­ter for Research on Anti­semit­ism (Zen­trum für Anti­semit­is­mus­forschung, ZfA) at TU Ber­lin is one of the most import­ant insti­tu­tions of its kind in the world. The focus of its work is fun­da­mental inter­dis­cip­lin­ary research on anti­semit­ism in its man­i­fold causes, mani­fest­a­tions and effects in the past and present, however this has always been expan­ded to include related top­ics. The avail­able pos­i­tions relate to the pro­ject "Identi­fy­ing the Real Dimen­sion of Anti­semit­ism 2.0 in Europe" which will begin in 2020 at the ZfA, ana­lys­ing pat­terns of anti­semitic lan­guage use and images on the inter­net. For this pur­pose, three coun­try teams are to be formed: for Ger­many, Great Bri­tain and France.

Work­ing field

In a three-year pilot pro­ject, an inter­na­tional team of research­ers will invest­ig­ate anti­semitic lan­guage and image use on news web­sites and social media plat­forms of the polit­ical main­stream in three European coun­tries (Ger­many, Great Bri­tain, France). A qual­it­at­ive lin­guistic con­tent ana­lysis of social media com­ments and ana­lysis of image mater­ial and text-image rela­tion­ships related to anti­semitic con­tent is planned. In addi­tion, quant­it­at­ive lin­guistic meth­ods will also be applied to the social media cor­pus. For the coun­try teams we are seek­ing two doc­toral stu­dents for the Eng­lish lan­guage area, two for the French lan­guage area and one for the Ger­man lan­guage area.

Require­ments

We are look­ing for can­did­ates who have suc­cess­fully com­pleted an aca­demic degree (Mas­ter, Dip­lom or equi­val­ent) in the sub­jects of lin­guist­ics, applied lin­guist­ics, semi­ot­ics and/or dis­course ana­lysis, social sci­ences and his­tor­ical stud­ies

Know­ledge or pre­lim­in­ary work in at least one of the fol­low­ing areas is a pre­requis­ite:

  • Prag­ma­lin­guist­ics
  • Cor­pus lin­guist­ics
  • Image ana­lysis, semi­ot­ics, mul­timodal com­mu­nic­a­tiono Dis­course Ana­lysis (CDA)
  • Media and/or com­mu­nic­a­tion stud­ieso Digital Human­it­ieso Argu­ment­a­tion the­ory
  • Know­ledge of past and present mani­fest­a­tions of anti­semit­ism is desir­able.
  • Exper­i­ence in using the MAXQDA soft­ware is an advant­age.

In addi­tion to excep­tional tech­nical expert­ise, excel­lent com­mu­nic­a­tion and team skills are required.

Lan­guage skills

  • The two doc­toral stu­dents for the Eng­lish lan­guage area must have excel­lent spoken and writ­ten Eng­lish lan­guage skills.
  • The two doc­toral stu­dents for the French lan­guage area must have excel­lent French lan­guage skills as well as excel­lent spoken and writ­ten Eng­lish skills.
  • The doc­toral stu­dent for the Ger­man lan­guage area must have excel­lent Ger­man lan­guage skills and excel­lent spoken and writ­ten Eng­lish skills.
