Rencontres d'histoire et de philosophie des sciences
Published on Thursday, February 04, 2021
Abstract
The seminar Rencontres d’histoire et philosophie des sciences aims to promote a history and philosophy of science in which, in the words of Aldo Mieli (1935), “the unity of scientific thought” is “brought to the forefront, in relation to the multifaceted developments of particular sciences”. In order to do this, it seems imperative to us to involve all those who have an interest in the history and philosophy of science in its most diverse expressions in order to consolidate a community which, to exist, must regain its collegiality.

Argument
The seminar Rencontres d’histoire et philosophie des sciences aims to promote a history and philosophy of science in which, in the words of Aldo Mieli (1935), « the unity of scientific thought » is « brought to the forefront, in relation to the multifaceted developments of particular sciences ». In order to do this, it seems imperative to us to involve all those who have an interest in the history and philosophy of science in its most diverse expressions in order to consolidate a community which, to exist, must regain its collegiality.
The Archives Internationales d’Histoire des Sciences (AIHS) are one of the few, if not the only, journals for history and philosophy of science to still maintain a generalist approach aimed at gathering, making known and keeping the results of the high level research that is developed concerning all cultural areas, all periods and all disciplines. Since 2018 Michela Malpangotto, the new editor-in-chief, has sought to broaden the areas of interest of the journal, with the aim of making the Archives the privileged place to give voice to the entire community of historians and philosophers of science. Nevertheless, this community cannot exist without a lively, active and profitable exchange.
The situation that we are experiencing because of Covid, on the one hand, places us in great difficulties by limiting our movements, but on the other hand, paradoxically, it induces us to meet, in a virtual room, for a series of meetings in which you are all invited to participate in order to share and compare opinions, methods, and experiences in the most different fields of the history and philosophy of science in a spirit of mutual enrichment.
To this end, we propose to meet once a month to examine collectively, in a friendly and constructive atmosphere, the works that colleagues have already submitted to our attention in the pages of the Archives. Our intention is to continue the Rencontres d’histoire et philosophie des sciences in future years. They will be enriched by the contributions of colleagues who have already published or wish to make their work known through the various sections of the Archives.
