About the Journal
Focus and scope
Vista is a scientific journal in the field of Visual Culture that aims to the promotion of a transdisciplinary debate around culture’s visual mediation processes (photography, cinema, television, advertising, videogames and digital media and so on).
Vista has the following goals:
- to promote the critical thinking on image and the study of visual objects, analog and digital, as well as media arts productions, within the field of Communication Sciences;
- to bring out a set of studies, resulting from different scientific domains, several geographical backgrounds and diverse historical moments, which translate heterogeneous theoretical and methodological frameworks around Visual Culture and technological arts ;
- to diversify the objects of analysis within the vast domain of Image Studies and Media Arts in order to broaden the sharing of the visible, actively contributing to a politics of vision;
- to encourage scientific contributions as well as sundry visual projects in areas such as photography, video art, urban art, and the technological arts, contributing to question the existing boundaries between scientific culture and artistic culture.
Conceived in 2015 by the Visual Culture Working Group of the Portuguese Association of Communication Sciences (Sopcom), in the last semester of 2020, started to be published by the Communication and Society Research Centre (CECS), Institute of Social Sciences, University of Minho.
The jornal is bianual (January-June and July-December). However, taking into account good scientific publication practices and in order to reduce the time between submission and publication, operates in a continuous publication. The journal is published in Portuguese and English and has a rigorous system of peer reviewing (double-blind reviewing process by external reviwers).
Journal structure
Vista is organised into four sections:
- articles;
- interviews;
- book reviews;
- visual projects.
The format “visual projects” privileges the visual content, opening up to the diversity of configurations that it can take, from photography to illustration, without neglecting the audiovisual, collage or digital remix. Submissions can articulate text and image, assuming the latter as a single vehicle of meaning production. The visual essay must be accompanied by a descriptive memory capable of contextualizing the visual work, clarifying its framework, intentions, objectives and/or methodology.
Permanent call
Vista invites proposals for original and unpublished academic papers on the topics related to the objectives and scope of the journal, in the form of (1) articles; (2) visual projects and (3) book reviews and interviews.
Works can be submitted in English or Portuguese. After the peer review process, the authors should ensure translation, and the editors shall have the final decision on publication of the article.
Works signed by doctors will be evaluated, in single authorship or co-authoring with doctoral candidates and masters. This restriction does not apply to the submission of reviews, which may be signed by doctoral candidates.
Vista is a peer-reviewed journal that uses a double blind peer review process. After submission, each work will be distributed to two reviewers, previously invited to evaluate it, in terms of its academic quality, originality and relevance to the objectives and scope of the journal.
Submission guidelines
Originals must be submitted via the journal's website (https://revistavista.pt/). If you are accessing Vista for the first time, you must register in order to submit your article (indications to register here).
The guidelines for authors can be consulted here.
