Published on Tuesday, February 16, 2021

Summary

Session presentation

This session aims at examining the tensions between universalization and physical and symbolic deterritorialization, on the one hand, and particularization and (geographical and cultural) territoriality on the other, in the case of practices that fall under the category of "spirituality" (non religious but symbolic and meaningful practices). At least as much as institutionalized religions and NMRs, spiritualties are spreading globally, by means of diffusion processes or, to a certain extent, migratory movements. Spiritualties are both part of and actors of (technological, economic, cultural...) globalization, and practices or symbolic systems impacted by the logics of globalization. This session will put emphasis on the role of moral and physical geographies as factors of globalization and of glocalization: on the one hand, regional labels and territorial imagination facilitate or restrict the worldwide diffusion of spiritual practices, but at the same time and paradoxically participate in their deterritorialization and detraditionalization; on the other hand, if global flows universalize spiritualties, their inscription in singular ideological and cultural contexts dye them with particular colours, they appear at the same time familiar / secular and exotic / sacred in this complex intertwining of geographical imaginaries and physical geographies, local and global. Practices of Asian origin (yoga, meditation, bodily and contemplative ascetic techniques) have long served as an exemplary model of these "global/local spiritualties" but the session’s purposes is to welcome fresh contributions and to open up to practices from other cultural horizons, in a comparative perspective.
