Presentation
The internationally renowned archaeologist Joseph Déchelette (1862-1914) was one of the founders of European protohistoric archaeology. The Association Joseph Déchelette, founded in 2010 by his great nephew Édouard Déchelette(†), would like to keep the memory of this great scholar alive and promote this discipline. It has therefore teamed up with various partners to establish the Prix Joseph Déchelette with a view to promoting the PhD research of a young archaeologist. This prize, created in 2016, is intended to be awarded every two years.
The prize is open to the wider European archaeological community. The award criteria include the values which were Joseph Déchelette’s trademark: open-mindedness, intellectual rigour, practicality and international experience.

Application criteria and prize regulations
Applications will be accepted from researchers who had their PhD thesis viva between 1 January 2019 and 31 December 2021.
The research that is the subject of the thesis must concern European protohistory, understood in a broad sense, both geographically and chronologically (Bronze age, Iron Age and Romanization). The jury will pay particular attention to the European dimension of the applications.
The language of the thesis writing is indifferent. Candidates will provide a document in French or English in 25,000 characters including a summary of the thesis and work perspectives for the year following the award of the prize (preparation of a publication, development of a research project, etc.), a curriculum vitae indicating their date of birth and including a bibliography of their work, an article published or accepted and the thesis defence report or, failing that, two letters of appreciation for their doctoral research by recognized specialists in the subject. The presentation of the work perspectives will be divided into five parts: general objectives, one-year objectives, method, means and partnerships to be mobilized, expected form of results (publication, round table, etc.). This presentation will specify how the project is linked to doctoral research and to the future of the candidate’s expected career.
The winner will be chosen by an international panel which will convene in Spring 2022.

The Prize
The prize money is €10,000, brought by Association Déchelette, the RGZM and the French ministry of Culture. Additional benefits in kind to be used in the year following the award of the prize include:
- a one-month research residency provided by the RGZM
- a one-month research residency provided by Bibracte
- a one-month research residency at the library of the Musée Déchelette offered by Roanne City Council
- a one-month research residency provided by the Laténium, in partnership with the Maison Borel foundation
- the organization of a round table by the MAN
- membership to the SPF and the Prehistoric Society
(The host institution will offer accommodation or accommodation and board, depending on the case).
The prize will be presented to the winner at the Musée des Beaux-Arts et d’Archéologie Joseph Déchelette, the municipal museum in Roanne, where the scholar was born and worked all his life.
Présentation
Archéologue de renom international, Joseph Déchelette (1862-1914) fut notamment un des fondateurs de l’archéologie protohistorique européenne. Créée en 2010 à l’initiative de son petit neveu Édouard Déchelette(†), l’association Joseph Déchelette souhaite entretenir la mémoire de ce grand savant et promouvoir la discipline qu’il affectionnait. Pour cela, elle s’est associée à différents partenaires pour instituer un Prix Joseph Déchelette destiné à mettre en avant la recherche doctorale d’un jeune archéologue. Ce prix créé en 2016 est destiné à être remis tous les deux ans.
Le prix se veut largement ouvert à la communauté archéologique européenne. Ses critères d’attribution comprennent les valeurs qui distinguèrent Joseph Déchelette : ouverture d’esprit, dimension européenne de la réflexion, rigueur intellectuelle, sens pratique.

Modalités de candidature et du règlement d’attribution du prix
Sont concernés les chercheurs qui ont soutenu leur thèse de doctorat entre le 1er janvier 2019 et le 31 décembre 2021.
La recherche qui fait l’objet de la thèse doit concerner la protohistoire européenne, entendue au sens large, tant du point de vue géographique que chronologique (âges des métaux et période de la romanisation). Le jury sera particulièrement attentif à la dimension européenne des dossiers.
La langue de rédaction de la thèse est indifférente. Les candidats fourniront un dossier en français ou en anglais en 25000 signes comprenant le résumé de la thèse et des perspectives de travail pour l’année suivant l’attribution du prix (préparation d’une publication, élaboration d’un projet de recherche...), un curriculum vitae indiquant leur date de naissance et incluant une bibliographie de leurs travaux, un article publié ou accepté et le rapport de soutenance de la thèse ou, à défaut, deux lettres d’appréciation de leur recherche doctorale par des spécialistes reconnus du sujet. L’exposé des perspectives de travail sera articulé en cinq parties : objectifs généraux, objectifs à un an, méthode, moyens et partenariats à mobiliser, forme escomptée des résultats (publication, table-ronde, etc). Cet exposé précisera comment le projet s’articule avec la recherche doctorale et avec la suite de la carrière escomptée par le candidat.
Le lauréat sera désigné par un jury international qui se réunira au printemps 2022.

Gratification du lauréat
La gratification en numéraire, apportée par l’association Joseph Déchelette, le RGZM et le ministère de la culture, se monte à 10 000 €. S’y ajoutent des gratifications en nature, qui seront à utiliser dans l’année qui suivra la remise du prix :
- un mois de séjour de recherche offert par le RGZM
- un mois de séjour de recherche offert par Bibracte
- un mois de séjour de recherche à la bibliothèque du musée Déchelette offert par la Ville de Roanne
- un mois de séjour de recherche offert par le Laténium, en partenariat avec la fondation Maison Borel
- l’organisation d’une table-ronde par le MAN
- l’adhésion à la SPF et à la Prehistoric Society
(l’institution invitante offrant selon le cas l’hébergement seul ou l’hébergement et la nourriture).
Le prix sera remis au lauréat au musée des Beaux-Arts et d’Archéologie Joseph Déchelette, musée municipal de la ville de Roanne où le savant naquit et travailla toute sa vie.
Präsentation
Joseph Déchelette (1862-1914), ein Archäologe von internationalem Ruf, war einer der Gründerväter der vorgeschichtlichen Archäologie in Europa. Auf Anregung seines Großneffen, Édouard Déchelette(†), wurde 2010 die Association Joseph Déchelette gegründet, welche die Erinnerung an diesen großen Wissenschaftler und Wegbereiter der Archäologie lebendig halten möchte. In Kooperation mit den unten aufgeführten Partnern möchte die Association einen Archäologiepreis Joseph Déchelette vergeben, mit dem die Forschungen einer/s jungen Archäologin/en nach ihrer/seiner Promotion gefördert werden sollen. Dieser im Jahr 2016 geschaffene Preis soll alle zwei Jahre vergeben werden.
Der Preis wendet sich an die breite Gemeinschaft der archäologisch Forschenden in Europa.
Die Kriterien für seine Verleihung richten sich nach den Werten, die Joseph Déchelette auszeichneten: Offenheit, wissenschaftliche Sorgfalt, Sinn für das Praktische, internationaler Blickwinkel.

Voraussetzungen für die Bewerbung und Bedingungen für die Preisverleihung
Zur Bewerbung werden Forscher/innen, die ihre Doktorarbeit zwischen dem 1. Januar 2019 und dem 31. Dezember 2021 verteidigt haben, aufgefordert.
Die Forschung, die Gegenstand der Dissertation ist, muss sich auf die europäische Vorgeschichte beziehen, die in einem weiten Sinne verstanden wird, sowohl geographisch als auch chronologisch (Bronzezeit, Eisenzeit und Periode der Romanisierung). Die Jury wird der europäischen Dimension der Anträge besondere Aufmerksamkeit schenken.
Die Sprache der Dissertation ist gleichgültig. Die Bewerber reichen eine Datei in Französisch oder Englisch in 25.000 Zeichen ein, die eine Zusammenfassung der Dissertation und der Arbeitsperspektiven für das Jahr nach der Preisverleihung (Vorbereitung einer Publikation, Entwicklung eines Forschungsprojektes usw.), einen Lebenslauf mit Angabe des Geburtsdatums und eine Bibliographie ihrer Arbeit, einen veröffentlichten oder angenommenen Artikel und den Verteidigungsbericht der Dissertation oder, falls dies nicht der Fall ist, zwei Anerkennungsschreiben für ihre Doktorarbeit durch anerkannte Spezialisten auf diesem Gebiet enthält. Die Präsentation der Arbeitsperspektiven gliedert sich in fünf Teile: allgemeine Ziele, Jahresziele, Methode, Mittel und Partnerschaften, die mobilisiert werden sollen, erwartete Form der Ergebnisse (Veröffentlichung, Runder Tisch, etc.). In dieser Präsentation wird erläutert, wie das Projekt mit der Promotionsforschung und der Zukunft der erwarteten Karriere des Kandidaten verknüpft ist.
Die Auszeichnung wird von einer internationalen Kommission vergeben, die im Frühjahr 2022 zusammentreten wird.

Höhe des Preisgeldes
Das Preisgeld beträgt 10.000 € und setzt sich aus Beträgen der Association Déchelette, des RGZM und des Ministère de la Culture zusammen. Zusätzlich werden dem/der Preisträger/in folgende Möglichkeiten geboten, die er/sie im darauffolgenden Jahr in Anspruch nehmen kann:
- Forschungsaufenthalt von einem Monat am RGZM in Mainz
- Forschungsaufenthalt von einem Monat in Bibracte
- Forschungsaufenthalt von einem Monat an der Bibliothèque du Musée Déchelette, auf Einladung der Stadt Roanne
- Forschungsaufenthalt von einem Monat am Laténium, in Zusammenarbeit mit der Fondation Maison Borel
- Organisation eines Workshops durch das MAN
- Einhaltung der SPF und der Prehistoric Society
(Die Einladung umfasst entsprechend den Möglichkeiten neben der Übernachtung auch die Verpflegung vor Ort).
Der Preis wird im Musée des Beaux-Arts et d’Archéologie Joseph Déchelette, in Roanne, verliehen, wo der Wissenschaftler sein ganzen Leben gewirkt und gearbeitet hat.
