Summary

Centro Interuniversitario di Ricerca sulle Metafore (CIRM) will be organizing its annual Conference in October 2022 on the focal issue of metaphor in digital communication. Metaphor in digital communication is a recent and highly interdisciplinary field of research, and it will be explored from different epistemological perspectives.

Centro Interuniversitario di Ricerca sulle Metafore (CIRM) will be organizing its annual Conference in October 2022 on the focal issue of metaphor in digital communication. Metaphor in digital communication is a recent and highly interdisciplinary field of research, and it will be explored from different epistemological perspectives.

We welcome proposals focussing on linguistic aspects, but also those developing an anthropological, sociological, or technological perspective, relating to one of the following research objectives:

  1. the discursive functions (persuasive, explicative, argumentative, etc.) fulfilled by metaphors within multiple and diverse forms of digital communication (Twitter, blogs, websites, pages on Facebook, audio messages and posted videos, etc.), analyzing their possible impact on the addressee;
  2. the different semiotic realizations of metaphors in digital communication, from linguistic metaphors to visual metaphors, which exploit the multimodal nature of digital communication for a (re)conceptualization of events and phenomena;
  3. the high framing power of metaphors on public opinion, but also their potential as a reframing tool, in order to reshape or correct a vision of reality modelled by other metaphors;
  4. the function of metaphors as a tool to facilitate access to complex concepts, but also as a more or less intentional tool of misinformation, contributing to informative chaos and the diffusion of fake news;
  5. the use of metaphors to talk about digital technologies aiming at validating or criticizing these technologies, paying special attention to the prevalent role that digital communication is assuming as a main source of information for citizenship;
  6. the potential of new technologies in the study of metaphors, through the development of tools for the detection and analysis of metaphors in corpora, or the use of digital technologies with an educational

 The conference proceedings (submitted to peer-review) will be published in the series “I Quaderni del CIRM”, TAB edizioni, in 2023.
