Resumo
Following T. W. Adorno’s definition of the essay as “the critical form par excellence; as immanent critique of intellectual constructions, as a confrontation of what they are with their concept, it is critique of ideology”, the essay film has constituted itself throughout its history as an audiovisual form for the expression and development of critical thinking, for questioning and problematising the discourses imposed on reality. This conference aims to analyse the production of critical thinking in the worldwide practice of the essay film, from an interdisciplinary perspective, considering a range of different approaches: film analysis, cinema history, cultural studies, reception theory, etc.

Following T. W. Adorno’s definition of the essay as “the critical form par excellence; as immanent critique of intellectual constructions, as a confrontation of what they are with their concept, it is critique of ideology”, the essay film has constituted itself throughout its history as an audiovisual form for the expression and development of critical thinking, for questioning and problematising the discourses imposed on reality. The author's subjective reflection and his/her dialogical and dialectical relationship with the spectator, as an intrinsic element of the essay film, makes the latter a privileged space for the construction of critical thinking. Thus, the essayist generates an audiovisual reflection that, in turn, is challenged and completed by the audience.
The essay film, therefore, becomes an instigator of critical thinking in multiple fields: political, social, cultural, philosophical, artistic, intimate ... This conference aims to analyse the production of critical thinking in the worldwide practice of the essay film, from an interdisciplinary perspective, considering a range of different approaches: film analysis, cinema history, cultural studies, reception theory, etc. How does critical thinking materialise in the practice of essay films? What are the procedures for its construction? Can we outline its defining characteristics? What are the performative capacities of the essay film as critical thinking? What is its impact on society?
