FNRS Research Project 2022-2026
2 PhD positions (100%)
Research project
We are looking for two candidates for fully funded 4-year PhD positions in the framework of the research project “Pierre Jeanneret, architect and constructor”, directed by Professors Giulia Marino (UCLouvain, supervisor) and Veronique Boone (ULB, co-supervisor). The research project aims to produce new and original knowledge on the production and work of Pierre Jeanneret (1896-1967). Remarkable both for the coherence of his approach and for the intelligence of the strategies of materialisation deployed, the architect's work is of exceptional scope, carried by an unfailing social commitment on all scales, from furniture to the city. To date, it has not been the subject of an exhaustive investigation.
The research project will investigate two complementary axes that coincide with the chronological division of the architect's career: the period of his collaboration with Le Corbusier (1922-1940), with the dynamics of designing the architectural project as a team, and his activities as an independent architect (1940-1951), raising the issues of the materialisation of modern architecture, through a perfect mastery of construction techniques and the challenges of industrial production. The tools of material history and cultural history will be used to shed light on the complexity of Pierre Jeanneret's work and reveal its richness.
Two successful candidates will be based at UCLouvain, Brussels and Université Libre de Bruxelles, and respectively address the issues of materialization and the dynamics of the project design process in team. Conducted in parallel and closely linked, they will be supervised by both research directors and guided by a committee of experts during the project, i.e. 4 years (2022-2026).
