Argument

From the cultural-historic perspective, festivals are shown as a way of analyzing public life, taking into account celebrations. Besides, it is closely related to the vision that power generates of itself. In this context, the importance of the ephemeral and ceremony are considered a transformation of aesthetic and symbolism, from which to establish a dialogue between reality and its embellished projection. Writing about the ephemeral is considered the epilogue of an improved reality in which a suggestive web of symbolic relations is staged. In addition to this, it offers a fascinating field of study which has been widely interpreted since the initial works of José Antonio Maravall and interdisciplinarity.

The dossier Women's rituals and spheres of power in the American viceroyalties tries to put together some case studies or in-depth reviews in which this phenomenon is approached as a gender issue from a comparative perspective. The general lines of research are the political imaginary around the sovereign that is the role played by the vicereine in her domains of influence to the agency of Creole women or women of peninsular origin in the viceregal courts. As these are phenomena of social cohesion of integrating nature, we also focus on the leading roles played by Indian and slave women in their typical ceremonies or the organized scenographic displays in the cities. Thus, we want to deepen it into a problem that has hardly been dealt with so far and offer a vision compared with other cultural realities that have been covered more massively in recent years.
