Marking the ninetieth anniversary of Fabrizia Ramondino's birth (1936-2008), the conference explores her narrative universe between cosmopolitanism, the Mediterranean and the writing of the self. Its aim is to examine her narrative universe, marked by a hyper-literariness and a cosmopolitanism that place her in dialogue with the writing of a wide range of authors, women and men alike, within a strongly transnational dimension. The conference also explores Ramondino's social commitment and her attachment to the South and the Mediterranean, as well as the relations between language, identity, memory and dislocation as these emerge in her writing of the self.

The Golden Age of Rural-Urban Migrations? Grassroots Perspective on Global Phenomenon 1930s – 1980s

The workshop aims to analyse the processes by which ‘ordinary people’ enter urban, culturally heterogeneous social environments in various parts of the world. The global revolutionary transformation observed between the 1940s and 1970s affected ways of working, communicating, moving about and consuming, resulting in fundamental social changes. We believe that, despite specific contexts, this shared global experience of ‘becoming urban’ and/or ‘remaining rural’ can be identified, compared and summarised. We therefore wish to highlight the agency and actions of ‘ordinary people’ within these global processes and analyse them from a microhistorical perspective – drawing on biographical, local and intergenerational perspectives.

The Bordeaux conference forms part of an international research project funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, bringing together Bordeaux Montaigne University (France), Humboldt University of Berlin (Berlin, Germany) and the University of Ibadan (Nigeria). Entitled ‘Cross-Connections between Nigeria and Négritude in the Decades of Decolonisation. Exploring and Translating the Archives of Orphée noir – Schwarzer Orpheus – Black Orpheus’, this project draws on the Janheinz Jahn archives in Berlin to reconstruct the intellectual and emotional ties between the German journalist and Africanist Janheinz Jahn, the writers of the Négritude movement (Césaire and Senghor) and the writers and intellectuals of the literary journal Black Orpheus published in Ibadan. Among its editors were notably Wole Soyinka and Es’kia Mphahlele (1960–1964).

In the context what Matthias Middell termed a “red globalization, visual cultures offer a unique vantage point for examining the processes of political legitimation and identity construction in postcolonial socialist societies. Studying the production, circulation, and reception of these images allows us to grasp the logic behind the appropriation and reinvention of aesthetic, cultural, and ideological models. It also illuminates the dynamics of exchange between the “brother countries” of the Global South and the socialist bloc.

For several decades, critical theories of society have relegated contemporary antisemitism to the margins. Often regarded as “non-systemic” or “residual,” and associated primarily with the past, antisemitism appears to elude the traditional frameworks of social and political critique. In academic research, efforts to connect the study of antisemitism with analyses of other forms of domination and othering remain limited. This international conference aims to move beyond this situation and to fully reintegrate the question of antisemitism into contemporary critical theory.

Since the 1990s, long-term care (LTC) policies across Western countries have undergone major transformations, notably toward marketization, aging in place, and recognition of informal caregivers. Despite this convergence, the normative and ideational dimensions of these changes remain understudied. Drawing on scholarship about the role of policy ideas in welfare state reform, the workshop invites contributions on three interconnected themes : the influence of international organizations and transnational networks on policy convergence ; the impact of shifting cultural norms around gender, family, and intergenerational solidarity ; and the concept of autonomy as both a normative framework and a practical tool for comparing LTC systems.

Lost in Their Words. Rewriting the Political Lexicon of the Far-Right

Focusing on Italian, German, French and other historical or national contexts, the volume conceptualises the Far-right not as a fixed ideological formation but as a dynamic and transnational network sustained by flexible and often unobtrusive linguistic infrastructures. It distinguishes between far Right as an adjectival umbrella term (neo-fascist, nationalist, radical, terrorist, subversive right movement and phenomena) and Far-Right as a situational category within the broader right–left continuum (Pirro 2023; Livi 2024). The volume does not seek to replace ideological analysis with a purely linguistic approach. Ideological formations remain central to any understanding of the Far-right. Yet they become historically intelligible only when examined through the semantic and discursive processes by which they are articulated, circulated and normalised.

Abundance or Sufficiency?

Since the 1970s, environmental constraints, shifting social values, and the crisis of post-war productivism have profoundly challenged the Western left. Once grounded in beliefs in scientific progress, technological innovations, and rising material prosperity, left-wing movements have increasingly been forced to confront planetary limits, rising inequality, and growing public ambivalence toward technoscience. These tensions have crystallised in contemporary debates on the Green Transition, where competing visions of abundance (growth-oriented technological optimism) and sufficiency (degrowth, sobriété, post-productivism) shape political and social antagonisms.
